APPROACH
Role: Concept Development • Art Direction • Styling
Developed as a portrait series with Nicolaas Swart, the project explored portraiture as an act of construction rather than revelation.
The series explores how quickly perception can shift.
Working with the same subject throughout, each portrait introduced only a small change in styling, posture, gesture or setting. Those subtle differences were enough to suggest entirely different identities, histories and emotional states.
Rather than defining the subject, the photographs leave space for the viewer to complete them. A projected landscape, a military reference, a mask or a direct gaze each encourages a different interpretation without ever settling on a single version of the person.
The portraits ask how much of what we believe we recognise actually belongs to the subject, and how much belongs to ourselves.
